From the day we found out that our walkout would be under the deck, I have considered ideas on how to install some kind of overhead structure that would funnel the drain water away giving me a covered patio.
Then my wife found this:

I think it will fit the bill quite nicely.
For those that wonder about cost, I got a quote today from a lumber yard that carried Timber Tech. For my 14'x12' deck, it will cost $585.50 +tax .
WOW!! This looks awesome and doesn't sound too horribly priced! Makes me wish we had a walkout with a second story deck!!
ReplyDeleteThis looks AMAZING! I'm a fan of a second story deck...I just haven't figured out what to do with the lower level. Still considering your idea for a zipline :)
ReplyDeleteHot tub!
DeleteThis link has all kinds of info on under deck drainage systems that may be helpful too:

The http://www.drysnap.com/ looked interesting. It seems like there are a few options out there that you can use to bargain with.
Thomas, you rock.
DeleteThat Drysnap looks maybe easier to install. I have sent a "where do I buy it" email.
Ha, I roll too ;-)
DeleteDid you hear back from the Drysnap folks yet? I will not have a deck like yours but I find it interesting none the less.
they sent instructions on how to get an estimate online. It involves putting in some dimensions and then emailing it off for a reply.
DeleteStill have not done it yet.
Great idea....

Rich! We also used timbertech decking - its the second time I have used this product and have found it to be of better quality than similar trex products.
ReplyDeleteOne other item you might consider is called Gorilla Deck. It is half (or less?) the cost of timbertech products, but is not of the same quality. Its a hollow pvc product, and specifically designed to shed water for 2nd story decks like yours. If cost is a big issue, I'd look into it. But if not, I think you would be happier with the higher quality timbertech products. Because the gorilla is all pvc, I think it can bend and warp with heat.
Not to complicate matters, but the $500 estimate sounds very low. Was that for a composite product? We chose the "earthwood evolutions" line -- its composite, but completely wrapped with PVC. Over time, the straight composite will fade, scratch and wear. The PVC wrap makes it pretty tough. I used the composite only product for my townhouse deck about 6 years ago and it has faded quite a bit, and scratched pretty easily. That never bothered me too much, but for some more high maintenance type folk, its a big problem. :)
I think you are talking about decking itself?
DeleteThe link is for a "ceiling" that can be installed under the deck. We got a wood deck built as part of the house. With the walkout under the deck, I would like to create a covered patio down there.
Thank you for posting! We've been thinking about this too. Great Post!
